Introduction
Another way to prevent plagiarism is to motivate students so that they appreciate the learning value of doing their own work for the course.
- Personal investment in course/relationship to instructor: Student are more likely to engage in academic dishonestly when they feel anonymous or uninvolved. Fostering engagement and active learning in a class can motivate students toward academic integrity.
- Connect to learning: Pointing out to students that by engaging in plagiarism (and other forms of academic dishonestly) they are not reaping the full benefits of their education may motivate them to use an assignment as an opportunity to learn. Providing the learning objectives for assignments and explaining what they will learn from completing them is a way to show students that they will benefit by doing the work themselves.
